The Gray Water Initiative

Before watering the grassInstead of coming home from work and relaxing, or working on the computer, my son and I pump water from the bathtub into a 20 gallon garbage can to water the garden. The good news is that in a few months we’ve reused about 1000 gallons of water.

The main reason I’m doing it is because here in San Francisco, and for that matter all of California, we are experiencing a water shortage/draught. So the thought of dumping almost 15 to 20 gallons of bath water down the drain each night seemed wasteful. I can’t take credit for the idea. When I was a kid, during a much more sustained drought, my Mom used to divert the water that expelled from the washing machine into a large garbage so she could water the garden to grow vegetables. Thanks Mom!
